How to Create a Post in WordPress Using the Gutenberg Editor
Creating a blog post in WordPress is easy with the default block editor (Gutenberg). This guide walks you through the steps to write, format, and publish a post, perfect for beginners building a blog or sharing updates.
Step 1: Log In to Your WordPress Dashboard
- Go to yoursite.com/wp-admin in your browser.
- Enter your username and password to access the dashboard.
- Locate the left-hand menu, where you’ll find options like Posts and Pages.
Step 2: Start a New Post
- In the dashboard, click Posts > Add New in the left menu. Alternatively, click New > Post from the top toolbar.
- The block editor opens, displaying a blank post with fields for the title and content.
Note: The block editor is WordPress’s default editor as of 2025, also known as Gutenberg.
Step 3: Add a Title
- Click the “Add title” field at the top of the editor.
- Type a clear, engaging title for your post (e.g., “My First Blog Post”).
Step 4: Write Your Post Using Blocks
The block editor uses “blocks” for different types of content (text, images, etc.).
- Add Text:
- Click below the title to start a Paragraph block.
- Type your content. Use the toolbar above the block to format text (bold, italic, links, etc.).
- Add Other Blocks:
- Click the “+” icon (top-left or within the editor) to open the block menu.
- Choose blocks like:
- Image: Upload or select an image from the media library.
- Heading: Add subheadings (H2, H3, etc.).
- List: Create bulleted or numbered lists.
- Quote: Highlight a quotation.
- Arrange Blocks: Drag and drop blocks using the arrows on the left to reorder them.
Step 5: Organize with Categories and Tags
- In the right sidebar, under the Post tab, find Categories:
- Check an existing category (e.g., “Blog”) or click “Add New Category” to create one.
- Under Tags, add keywords (e.g., “travel, tips”) to help readers find your post.
Step 6: Set a Featured Image
- In the right sidebar, under the Post tab, click Set Featured Image.
- Upload an image or select one from the media library.
- Click “Set Featured Image” to confirm. This image appears in blog feeds and social shares.
Step 7: Preview and Publish
- Save Draft: Click “Save Draft” in the top-right to save your work.
- Preview: Click “Preview > Preview in new tab” to see how your post will look live.
- Publish:
- Click “Publish” in the top-right to make your post live.
- Confirm by clicking “Publish” again in the pop-up.
- Schedule (Optional): To publish later, click the calendar icon next to “Publish” and set a date and time.
Step 8: Edit or Update Your Post
- Go to Posts > All Posts in the dashboard.
- Hover over your post and click “Edit” to make changes.
- Click “Update” to save changes to a published post.
Troubleshooting
- Block Editor Not Loading: Clear your browser cache or disable conflicting plugins.
